ArchivalResource

Genealogical data pertaining to the Hemings family of Monticello, 1961-1966.

The collection contains charts, correspondence and notes of John Cook Wyllie, Pearl M. Graham, Nellie E. Jones and Stuart G. Gibboney concerning Betty Hemings and her descendants including Sally Hemings. Included is correspondence of and about Nellie E. Jones, a descendant of Madison Hemings and the owner of a pair of spectacles and an inkwell once owned by Thomas Jefferson. Letters from Pearl M. Graham discuss her research on Jefferson-Hemings descendants, and her belief that the novel "Clotel" is based on fact. She also disputes Thomas Jefferson Randolph's denial to historian Henry S. Randall of a liason between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, a denial then repeated in James Parton's life of Jefferson. The collection also contains a photograph of the gravestone of Priscilla Hemmings; research notes and genealogies charted by John Cook Wyllie including one tracing the ancestry of Nellie E. Jones; and a photograph of Ann Elizabeth Forrest Isaacs from Ebony magazine, 1954.
